About Hell's Gate Watercraft Rentals

One lake. Endless possibilities.

Clean blue water. Sky-bordered cliffs. The allure and thrills of Hell’s Gate.

Our decades-long journey on Possum Kingdom Lake

Hell’s Gate is a paradox: natural wonder entrenched in a man-made reservoir. Archaic sandstone blended with modern technology. This is a place of Comanche-and-fur-trader lore that evolved to party boats tied off as professional divers throw themselves from 90-foot cliffs.

The Hell’s Gate Watercraft Rental team is synonymous with that of Bluff Creek Marina. A location so abundant with legend and personality needs its own spotlight. Our team’s knowledge of and proximity to Hell’s Gate gives us an advantage in helping visitors have an awesome time on the water. It doesn’t hurt that we have the best rental fleet and amenities on the lake.

We hope you’ll spend some time with us, stop in at the ship store or fuel dock, and look forward to helping you have an incredible time at a place we call home.

About Hell’s Gate at Devil’s Island on Possum Kingdom Lake

Hell’s Gate is a strait that passes through two opposing 90-foot-high bluffs on the south side of Possum Kingdom Lake. Texas State Highway 16 from the closest waypoint of Brad, Texas will take you up through the Hell’s Gate Loop, straight to Hell’s Gate and a straight shot to Bluff Creek Marina.

The coordinates: 32.852116579459086, -98.47043793863841

The strait is located at Devil’s Island, an approximately 1,000-foot-long and 500-foot-wide island without beaches and accessible by kayak or boat. The “Hell’s Gate Party Cove” at Devil’s Island is known for its massive fireworks display each Fourth of July and draws dozens of boats who flock to the location during the summer days.

The local legend says that two fur traders came across a Comanche camp in their travels. They offered the Comanche some whiskey then with rascally cunning, stole the Indians’ high-quality pelts in the dark of night. They made it five miles–ending at one of the Devil’s Island cliffs–before the Comanche caught up to them. One of the trappers reportedly said he would rather “jump through the gates of hell” than give up those fine furs. The Indians filled the trappers with arrows, and the legend of Hell’s Gate was born.
